God is all about people, not money, and I feel sorry for anyone who tries to take over the current move of God, put it in a box, stick a label on it, and own it they will be swept away. At that time it was under the leadership of its founder, Dawson Trotman, and it was my privilege and delight to be a close friend of his, to have spent a good deal of time with him and to come under the influence of his teaching and his methods. The bride is limping! It wasnt even about secondary doctrine (the second coming, the nature of baptism). Then not only did they have the Bible, but every Navigator who was anybody at all had to have an index drawn in on the pages of the Bible, a kind of a ladder that gave you a clue to where the books were so that with your thumb you could turn up any book in the Bible almost instantly. Ones honor and reputation were valued highly and if someone attacked your reputation it was expected that you would defend yourself and retaliate by publicly bashing your attacker. There are three different causes of divisions in churches that Paul mentions in I Corinthians. If you survey the church scene all over America today, you find people dividing up this way. WebWhat were the causes of division in the Corinthian Church? Sermon 5: Who is the Most Important? Paul exhorts them to agree. The Corinthian Church. If it had been left up to us to plan the program by which God would change the world we would never have included a cross. Sermon 5: Who is the Most Important? If we sacrifice quality for numbers I dont think we are being good stewards of our gift of leadership. The church at Corinth had divided loyalty to different leaders. Within our churches, and even in our own denominations (sophisticated name for divisions), we argue about church funds, whos on the worship team, and whether the youth should have long hair. But when each piece is fitted together into its proper place in the puzzle, you have a beautiful and complete picture. He had received a report from the household of Cloe that there were quarrels among the members of the Corinthian church. Some followed Apollos whom they honored above Paul (1 Corinthians 1:12; 3:4; Acts 18:24 to 19:1). Its pastors, bishops and others who fear the loss of their livlihoods as their former sheep move on in God towards the new wine skins of revival that want to maintain the old wine skins which brought them an income. Each group claimed to be better than the others, and party spirits began to grow in the church. There was still a fourth group, and in some ways I think they were probably the worst. The Corinthian church had many problems, and most of them were the result of pride and placing so much emphasis on social status. These are two common causes of church divisions in the West. In her book, The Key to a Loving Heart, Karen Mains includes a parable about the church entitled The Brawling Bride. That is the mind Paul is talking about. Other divisions were to follow. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. All that mattered to Paul was Jesus! We see similar situations today, with political debates often devolving into a shouting match in which the person who yells their opinion the loudest and the longest is the winner. WebThe spirit that wrought such mischief at Corinth has been busy in the Church ever since. One of the celebrities was Paul himself some believers at Corinth actually claimed to be his followers. Try it some time. The individual leaders should only point them to Christ. The most well known one is having worship on Sundays instead of the Sabbath. Since I was working at that time in the ship's service department in Pearl Harbor, we ordered great quantities of these Bibles. Thank you, Father, for this time here contemplating the cross. This is not what the Church was meant to be like, and I fully believe that Paul would be appalled by our actions today as a Church of believers in Jesus Christ. I have had to do some degree of battle with this myself. There should be oneness of mind, no matter how long it takes. He begins the process of developing them into leaders who will also preach the gospel and found more churches. For a local church to be spiritually healthy and effective, and for there to be harmony in the local church, there must be doctrinal unity. Now to this, there should be a division that exists considering that there are some denominations that do teach correct biblical doctrine, while other churches deviate from correct biblical doctrine in order to teach their own false doctrines. They embraced the values of their Roman society, which divided over ethnicity (e.g., Jews vs. Gentiles) and social rank (wise vs. foolish, powerful WebDivisions in the Church. (1 Corinthians 1:12 RSV) Now, there was the trouble at Corinth. Peter was an uneducated, common man and may have appealed to that group of people in Corinth. Their relationship to Christ was the unifying factor of the church. WebThe members of the Corinthian church we disunited because they were pledging their allegiance to human leaders rather than God. So rather that detailing their accomplishments as orators, Paul describes their functions (Paul planted, Apollos watered, etc.) When you get men's eyes off all these status symbols, and call them back away from following men to the Person of Christ and his cross, all the divisions will disappear. This issue was so important that Paul devotes the first four chapters of I Corinthians to divisions in the church. They were also not afraid to be mentioned in Pauls letter to the church. WebThe Christians at Corinth were dividing the church by pledging their loyalties to different celebrities. They are his family in Christ. Was Paul crucified for you? WebPaul rebukes the Corinthians because there are divisions and quarrels in the church. That is why Paul calls us back to it. I find there are these tendencies right here in Peninsula Bible Church. God only sees one fold, (John 10) and there is only one faith, one Lord, one baptism etc. The followers of Jesus may have believed in Jesus words only, and did not believe that the writings of Peter, Paul, and the other apostles were really Scripture. They were boasting over who had baptized them. What is a clique? A number of churches in this postmodern era have begun to resemble the Corinthian church in alarming ways. I dont remember Paul seeing any thing like these issues as other than trivial. How important was unity to our Lord Jesus Christ? Help us to judge these in the light of the cross, and, by its light, to walk before thee. Not when some people in the congregation wont look at, speak to, or even acknowledge the existence of certain other people in the congregation. We have our theological view points, and even our philosophical ones (even though we could have less of that in our churches today in my opinion) but we also have our social dimensions as well. Instead of tearing themselves apart, he urges them to be made complete in the same mind and in the same judgment. He then goes on to describe for us the mind of Christ, which is a willingness to give up rights and personal privileges and give in and take a lower place. I am thankful that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius; lest any one should say that you were baptized in my name. Thanks for the thoughtful comment Austin. (I suppose that if Dio were commenting on the modern world, he would describe the wretched bloggers shouting abuse at the temple of WordPress!). Some Corinthian Christians were dividing over church teachers. The Protestant Reformation had its beginnings in 1517 (see Chapter 1 0). I think the letter to the Philippians helps us here, because in that passage I just quoted from, Paul goes on to say, "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus," (Philippians 2:5). Not when we hear of churches with factions or cliques of people who sit on opposite sides of the aisle. They failed to take seriously the power of evil; their behavior caused divisions in the church and led to a lack of concern for other members. 11 For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there is quarreling among you, my brothers. As a result, this led to the division among Christian converts and to the Christian community as a whole. The cross of Christ is what will heal the fragmentation of Christians wherever they are. 14I am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15so no one can say that you were baptized into my name. In what ways have we failed to de-paganize? (Phil Long). And some of them are really gross. Paul rejects this disunity, telling the church members to focus on Christ. I think we have failed to de-paganize the art of preaching/teaching if pastors/leaders are looking for patronage, prestige, and numbers over relationships, service, and transformation. [Then he thinks of another group that he had baptized] (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas. So, just a few texts and there are so many more. What he says we'll listen to, not Paul or Peter or anyone else -- it makes no difference to us." Its a lot harder! It is possible that these divisions represent competing house churches, some founded by Paul, some by Apollos. But when it comes to the clear teachings of Gods Word, there cannot be two conflicting views that are both right. Its not just the denominations per se any more theres also a proliferation of house churches too. They did not try to hide the problems. (1Corinthians 1:10 RSV). That is always the unifying factor in a church, and that is the mind that is to be among us, the mind that does not consider itself the most important thing. He gathers disciples and establishes a church, a meeting place for educating his disciples. A second issue that seems to keep the church divided (the whole church and individual churches) is the little things such as the structure of the service, the type of music played for worship, whether a pastor should always wear a tie, and what color should be used in the bathroom. In these cases, there should be freedom to agree to disagree. I told them that I do not foresee and end to these divisions anytime soon (sadly). Paul continues in verse 10 by saying that, MANS WISDOM VERSUS GODS WISDOM I Corinthians 1:18-25, WHY DONT PEOPLE BELIEVE? The church was divided into factions, and one group was urging him to take half the congregation and go to another part of the city and start a new church. Others were saying, "Well, Apollos himself baptized me." This is the result of a religious snobbery associated by cliques that produced pride and conflict. Others bragged that they were followers of Peter (1 Corinthians 1:12). And more than that, we have a responsibility to obey him, to follow his Lordship. But yet the apostle says they are to be of the same mind. It is a serious threat to the life of a church to find people choosing favorite preachers, to the degree, at least, that they do not want to listen to anyone else. WebAccording to Paul, the communitys problems were the consequence of the Corinthians mistaken belief that they had already been exalted. He described the activities of the disciples of the Sophists the professional orators who were able to command large audiences, high fees for educating youth, and often a great deal of power within the city. These preachers draw in masses of people every week who are eager to hear them speak. Paul goes right on, in Verse12, to describe the forms that these divisions were taking in the church of Corinth: What I mean is that each one of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas" [another name for Peter], or "I belong to Christ." He was introduced in a rather extended and flowery way, but he came on and in his great, booming voice said, "I'm not Dr.Oswald Hoffman, the great preacher of the Lutheran Hour. The Protestant Reformation had its beginnings in 1517 (see Chapter 1 0). They were caused by Cliques (1:12; 3:4). The words made complete in verse 10 are translated from a Greek word that was used to speak of mending such things as nets, bones, dislocated joints, broken utensils, and torn garments. And I say that because some people focus on PREACHER instead of THE SAVIOR. In Philippians 2:9 Paul said of Christ, Therefore also God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name. No Christian, no Christian minister, is to put himself in Christs place, or allow himself to be put in Christs place, and take the authority and honor that is due to Christ alone. WebAnd you know, that gives me some idea of how important this is to God, because from 1:10 to the ninth verse of the sixteenth Chapter, he just talks about the errors in the church. That is why we have four gospels, because not even one of the disciples who was with the Lord was capable of giving us a complete enough view of Christ. Christians are all disciples, or better, stewards and servants of the mysteries of God (1 Cor 4:1). (I have been trying for a long time to get my wife to accept that!) It is possible that these divisions represent competing house churches, some founded by Paul, some by Apollos. Many of the other problems were flowing out of this division within the congregation. God, therefore, has designed that there be many teachers, many preachers, many viewpoints, in a church. Long has taught full time at Grace Christian University since 1998, specializing in Bible and Biblical languages. The countless denominations and different beliefs of Christianity are often not appealing to non-believers. There was extreme competition among the orators for honor and power. WebWhat were the causes of division in the Corinthian Church? In verses 14 to 16, Paul uses himself as an example. Some considered Paul their leader, others Apollos, still others Peter. We must allow him the privilege of doing that. WebThe Corinthians were basically making a mockery of Communion. If Paul were to visit one of these churches, he would see a good-looking man in a custom suit standing over everybody else, and his mind would go straight to the orators of his day. Some followed Apollos whom they honored above Paul (1 Corinthians 1:12; 3:4; Acts 18:24 to 19:1). The first noticeable division would be among differing denominations. "One is your master; all of you are brothers," (Matthew 23:8 KJV). Like the orators wanted more money from the fees they charged, many pastors just want more people to look better and have a bigger budget. They failed to take seriously the power of evil; their behavior caused divisions in the church and led to a lack of concern for other members. Phil Long is correct, we have not improved much since the first century. Doesnt He deserve better than this? the author asks. Lovelessness among Christians is not a light thing.. (Peter, evidently, had been through Corinth and had preached there.) Why? 3- The presence of an immoral member. Do we need to be looking for results? In verse 11, Paul gives the reason for his appeal for unity in the church at Corinth. Paul gives the church a stern warning about their actions and the proper way to participate. That is why the apostle appeals to it. This is a very propitious time for us to consider the cross for this is Palm Sunday, commemorating the day when our Lord entered Jerusalem for his last week. Offshoots had disturbed the church. In other words, there must be agreement with Christ, with His will, and with His Word. Luke says in Acts 4:12, And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men, by which we must be saved. The ground is level at the cross. Even though the churches within a certain denomination agree to the same biblical teachings, some churches within those denominations may begin to disagree with the biblical teachings and break away from the denomination to become affiliated with another denomination that aligns with their beliefs. That, of course, is as it should be. This division in the church was over their own selfish ambitions evidenced in what they wanted. He had received a report from the household of Cloe that there were quarrels among the members of the Corinthian church. Acts 18:24 says that Apollos was an Alexandrian by birth, an eloquent man. He had received a report from the household of Cloe that there were quarrels among the members of the Corinthian church. The church at Corinth had divided loyalty to different leaders. The Lords Supper was affected by the divisions between rich and poor and an overall general misunderstanding. Even as Christians, there seems to be the desire of wanting to uphold one pastor over another by comparison and ultimately glorifying certain pastors. I think that if you put the teachings of a man over the teachings of Scripture then you have a problem. This doesnt mean that they have to agree on the minutest points in areas where there is no clear teaching in Scripture. In what ways have we failed to de-paganize? 17For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospelnot with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? We are all equally undeserving of salvation and a relationship with Jesus Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, and whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. You and I cant have more of the Lord Jesus Christ, but we can give Him more of ourselves, and experience more fully what is already ours as children of God. They are still acting just like the world.
